Savor Scottsdale to the Power of 3
By Kimberly Hundley

Every local media outlet will soon be all over Eats3, the new ultra-culinary and cocktail affair set to explode for three days, Oct. 23-26, in Scottsdale’s SouthBridge area. But make no mistake; this event bears the stamp of Downtown Scottsdale in more ways than one.

Eats3 was created by Savor Scottsdale, a loose consortium of the city’s one-of-a-kind restaurants with a determination to create a national buzz about Scottsdale’s tasty factor. Don Carson, the legend behind Don & Charlie’s restaurant on Camelback and 75th St., explains this culinary event springs directly from the hearts and cook pots of the restaurateurs.

“We care about the community and we want people to understand that this is a dining destination—we can compete with any big city in the country when in comes to having fine places to eat,” Carson says. “We have a lot of James Beard award-winning chefs hanging their hats here. This is really an oasis for fine food.”

Viva La Difference
A year in the baking, Eats3 promises to rival any previous culinary event in the Valley, with celebrity chefs, master mixologists, a sponsorship with Food & Wine magazine, and events priced for every pocketbook.

Big names such as Chef Jacques Pépin aside, the emphasis is on local talent, food and flavors. “No chains have been invited to celebrate—this is really going to be a celebration of the local and unique Arizona flavor. We now have 40 restaurants participating, and we’re looking to exceed that,” says Ty Largo, director of marketing for Eats3.

Along with Arizona’s Iron Chef competitors Beau MacMillan and Mark Tarbell, and local chefs Nobu Fukuda of See Saw, and Robert McGrath, Roaring Fork-founder, will be among the fab 40. Even Jeff Smedstad, formerly of the still-great Los Sombreros, will take the trip from his new Sedona sensation, Café Elote.

Despite his years steeped in famous athletes at Don & Charlie’s, Carson has a culinary celebrity he’s hoping to meet. “I’m not going to say his name right, but I wouldn’t mind getting a peek at ‘Peepin.’”

Tongue Twisting
Eats3 isn’t afraid to mix up things with a few cocktails either—a fresh twist on your run-of-the-mill foodie event. Savor Scottsdale is importing five of the nation’s top bartenders to compete for a sort of “Iron Bartender” title. Steve Dowds of First Street Ice House will represent Scottsdale.

Attendees will watch the mixologists work their liquid magic while enjoying signature-cocktail samples passed throughout the audience with hors d’oeuvres courtesy of Food Bar, Estate House and Canal (all members of the SouthBridge Restaurant Group).

The official tagline for Eats3 is “Sizzle, Sip and Swizzle,” which may be clever but sure isn’t easy to spit out. “It stands for ‘S’ to the third power, but we laugh about it every time we get together,” Carson admits.

The number 3 also refers to three days and three nights of culinary delight to rival any Downtown Scottsdale has ever known. Get your tickets now, and help establish your town’s dining and drinking identity.
